The widowed Elizabeth Bacon Custer, who never remarried, wrote three popular books in which she fiercely protected her husband's reputation.[134][note 9] She lived until 1933, hindering much serious research until most of the evidence was long gone.[135] In addition, Captain Frederick Whittaker's 1876 book idealizing Custer was hugely successful.[136] Custer as a heroic officer fighting valiantly against savage forces was an image popularized in Wild West extravaganzas hosted by showman "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Pawnee Bill, and others. It was not until over half a century later that historians took another look at the battle and Custer's decisions that led to his death and loss of half his command and found much to criticize.[137]
Christopher Kortlander has been a Western Americana collector and dealer for most of his adult life. His personal collection was assembled over several decades and features some of the rarest and most desirable works and historic collectibles in the province of the Indian Wars and America's Westward expansion. Kortlander's appreciation for the unique history and grandeur of the West goes far beyond building his own amazing personal collection of books, manuscripts, and Western Americana collectibles. In addition, Kortlander published "Custer In Photographs," and produced a play, "Libbie," which offered a new take on the battle and its aftermath.
In this commemorative edition of his first published book, Goble recounts the tale of Custer's last battle through the eyes of Red Hawk, a fictional young Lakota warrior. Presented in the shorter format that Goble originally intended, and combined with a new author's introduction and a foreword by Joe Medicine Crow, the Crow tribal historian whose grandfather was one of Custer's own scouts, readers will marvel at this tale of honor and bravery.
